Energy Efficient Double Glazing

In the window industry there are 2 main suppliers of glass, the more popular Pilkington and the lesser known Saint-Gobain glass. Pilkington are manufacturers of their famous Pilkington K-Glass system which uses a 'hard-coat' of metal in the glass to reduce heat loss by reflecting the heat waves back into the property. Saint-Gobain produce soft-coat technology glass which is now becoming more popular as it performs better than hard-coat glass and also does not appear misty when sunlight passes through the glass.

Building regulations for England & Wales were recently changed and now state that the minimum standard for replacement double glazing is C-rated and no longer E-rated. This is the main reason glass manufacturers such as Doncaster Glass have started to manufacture soft-coat glass.

Building regulations and FENSA regulations are not applicable to conservatories, however it is strongly advised to fit Low-e soft coat glass to your new conservatory as it will be mainly glass. This can mean the difference between using your conservatory 356 days per year and hardly ever using it. At AWM we manufacture only the most efficient conservatories in Doncaster and are able to provide detailed advice and quotations.

uPVC Window Frame Energy Efficiency

Over the past 4-5 years many companies such as the uPVC profile and glass manufacturers have invested time and money into researching window energy ratings. There is a lot of confusion in the industry as to how energy efficient windows differ from standard uPVC windows. The following passage gives some insight into how uPVC windows and conservatories can be made to perform to a much higher standard. At AWM we manufacture our A-Rated windows and conservatories in our Doncaster factory and our low-E (low emissivity) glass comes directly from Doncaster Glass who work alongside us to ensure our products are as efficient as possible.

The uPVC window frame can be adjusted to be more energy efficient than standard by fabricating the windows with PVC thermal reinforcement instead of aluminium or steel. This reduces the conductivity of the installed windows and means cold cannot transfer across the thermal bridge. We are able to manufacture our uPVC windows to any requested specification in our Doncaster factory. In conservatories there is a lot of profile length so it is strongly advised to consider thermal reinforcement.

Fitting uPVC Windows Correctly

It makes sense to ensure that your new windows are fitted correctly because it is counter productive to install A-rated frames and glass if there are air gaps around the frame. Correct fitting is especially important in conservatories both with regards to life expectancy and usability. Make sure to view some recently installed conservatories before committing to a contractor. AWM have many conservatories recently installed in Yorkshire and within 50 miles of Yorkshire that you are welcome to visit.
