uPVC Casement Windows

A uPVC casement window is what most people would consider to be a ‘normal’ window, they differ from tilt & turn double glazing because they open outwards on friction stays whereas tilt & turn open inwards on hinges secured by shoot bolts. There is an almost unlimited range of styles for casement designs, however they must be designed to comply with FENSA regulations relating to fire escape openers and toughened glass requirements.

Casement openers can either be top hung to push out from the bottom or can be side hung to open from the right or the left.

At our Docaster factory we manufacture a range range of designs to suit your style and budget requirements.

Casement Window Manufacture Process

Every uPVC casement window starts life as resin powder which is a mix of materials formulated to withstand extreme weather conditions. uPVC stands for unplasticized polyvinyl chloride; it is commonly used in the construction industry not only for double glazing but also for rainwater goods such as guttering and downpipes.

At the uPVC extrusion plant the PVC resin powder is heated up and pushed through a mould that allows the window profiles to take its shape. The uPVC is then rapidly cooled by water which sets the profile in its shape and it is cut to 6 meter lengths. In total there are 11 different shapes of PVC needed to manufacture the finished product.

At the window fabrication plant the required window and door styles are input into the manufacturing software which effectively prints off a bill of materials for the window. The fabricators then cut down the required profile lengths from the required profile shapes so that they are ready to be welded. However before the profiles are welded internal drainage channels need to be routed to allow any standing water to drain away and steel reinforcement is inserted to strengthen the profile. The frames are then placed on the welding machine which heats up the plastic and then clamps the two lengths of PVC together, once cooled this effectively creates a single L-shaped piece of extrusion.

After all the outer case frames and opening sashes have been welded they must then be cleaned at the corners to remove any excess corner weld weld. The window locks are then inserted into the window sashes and the keeps for the locks are screwed onto the case frame. After which the sashes are then hung into the case frames using stainless steel friction stays and the window handles are secured to the sash using self-tapping screws.

Window Colour Options

We now offer a wide range of colour combinations for you new double glazing; the combinations are either the same colour inside and out or coloured on the outside and white on the inside. The different double glazing colours are made with woodgrain foils which is bonded to the plastic during the extrusion process. It is also worth considering that these foils must be bonded onto a base profile colour which can either be white, brown or caramel; we are able to offer advice on the best option for each colour.
